Unit History

The King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC) was an infantry rifle regiment of the British Army. It was originally raised in Colonial North America as the "Royal American" Regiment during the The French and Indian War. Subsequently numbered the 60th Regiment of Foot, the regiment served for more than 200 years throughout the British Empire. In 1958, the regiment joined the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry and the Rifle Brigade to become the Royal Green Jackets. The KRRC eventually becoming 2nd Battalion, The Rifles in 2007.


Leading up to the First World War, the KRRC had developed a significant service history in the Peninsular Campaign of the Napoleonic Wars, China, Burma, Afghanistan, Egypt, and South Africa. During The Second Boer War, two officers were awarded the Victoria Cross.
 

During the First World War, the battalions under the KRRC primarily served in the Western Front with some members serving in West Africa. We portray the First Battalion, which had significant combat experience in France. The 1st Battalion landed at Rouen as part of the 6th Brigade in the 2nd Division in August 1914 for service on the Western Front. It saw action at the Battle of Mons in August 1914, the First Battle of the Marne and the First Battle of the Aisne in September 1914 and First Battle of Ypres in October 1914. It fought at the Battle of Festubert in May 1915, the Battle of Loos in September 1915 and the Battle of the Somme in Autumn 1916 before taking part in the advance to the Hindenburg Line, the Battle of Arras in November 1917, the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917, the Second Battle of the Somme in Autumn 1918 and the Battle of the Selle in October 1918. Seven members of the regiment were awarded the Victoria cross, one of which was in the 1st Battalion.

  • 04.08.1914 Stationed at Aldershot at the outbreak of war as part of the 6th Brigade of the 2nd Division.

  • 13.08.1914 Mobilised for war and landed at Rouen and were engaged in various actions on the Western Front including;
    During 1914

  • The Battle of Mons and the subsequent retreat, The Battle of the Marne, The Battle of the Aisne, First Battle of Ypres during which B, C and D, companies were surrounded and overwhelmed losing a total of 1.027 men either killed, missing or wounded in just 6 weeks.
    During 1915

  • Battle of Givenchy, The Battle of Festubert, The Battle of Loos.

  • 13.12.1915 Transferred to the 99th Brigade of the 2nd Division.

  • The Battle of Delville Wood, The Battle of the Ancre, Operations on the Ancre.

  • 11.11.1918 Ended the war in France, Capelle N.E. of Solesmes.
